From the first Sunday of Advent, our imposing Christmas tree is decorated in the Grand Hall, and the museum is beautifully adorned. We are open every day, including Christmas Eve and Christmas Day!
Christmas Cosiness Every Day
Experience the building in its festive atmosphere, get creative with crafts, buy Christmas decorations, and enjoy some Christmas cosiness with Advent treats. Explore our exhibitions and peek into the dolls’ houses, lit by the glow of the Christmas tree. The Nordiska museet is open every day, including Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
In the Museum Shop and webbshop, you’ll find sustainable Christmas gifts and seasonal classics, including candle holders, angel chimes and textile craft kits. Don’t miss the second-hand corner, Artur’s Bazaar. In the restaurant and Café Lusknäppen, you can take a break and enjoy Advent treats, Christmas platters, mulled wine, and hot apple cider.
As per tradition, Christmas season at Nordiska museet kicks off on the first Sunday of Advent with the lighting of the Christmas tree in the Great Hall. This year it will take place on 29 November.
The most stylish Christmas tree in town?
Every year, our magnificent tree, eight meters tall, stands decorated in the Grand Hall at the Nordic Museum. It features hundreds of traditional, handmade, and unique decorations from the museum’s hidden gems. Each year, we invite a special guest to add their own touch to the tree with personal decorations. 2026 our Christmas tree creator is Karin Ferner. Ferner is an award-winning artist and silversmith based in Falun. Her work is characterized by a playful blend of tradition and innovation, drawing inspiration from folk art, upcycling, and the rich cultural heritage of Dalarna.
Traditions and celebrations around Christmas
As a museum of cultural history, Nordiska museet documents and brings to life everyday life and celebrations in the Nordic region. What do people celebrate, and how? What do the traditions and rituals of yesterday and today look like? And what role do they play in our social life?
Our work and our knowledge of traditions are based on cultural-historical research. We also gather a lot our knowledge from our extensive collections of artefacts and archives. Since the late 19th century, we have been documenting and gathering knowledge about rituals and traditions in people’s everyday lives.
